Gateway Open Arms: is a separate 501c3 all volunteer non-profit organization that operates Hunger Helpers and continues to grow as more and more families realize new needs in this slow economy. Hunger Helpers serves Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston Counties and is now believed the be the largest distributor of food to those in need in the Berkeley County area. We encourage sponsors and invite all private or company donations to this wonderful community program and we encourage church, school or business can goods drives or direct participation. Normal Distribution is the third Saturday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Hunger Helpers Food Distribution Program serves hundreds of families monthly with thousands of pounds of groceries.
We obtain and procure most of our food via the Low Country Food Bank requiring several trips weekly by truck to pick up food. The most recent complete break down and removal from service of the loaner bus from the church left us in dire need of a box truck. We were fortunate to get a $5000 grant from the Exchange Club of Charleston towards a truck but that was short of the $12,000 needed to get a decent working truck with a lift. We have stepped out and procured the truck but need help to offset the operating costs and fuel. We are always looking for volunteers with both food pick up and distribution.
The huge increase in demand has continued in 2014 with the 9.9% unemployment rate and continued decline in the economy. Gateway Open Arms and Hunger Helpers is a 100% volunteer program with all donations going directly to fulfilling community needs. "feeding the community "One Family at a Time"
